Often the demand for organic products exceeds supply which makes the the search for buyers easier and improves their profitability. On the other hand, it can be difficult for exporters in tropical climates to compete with growing organic standards in Europe.

After several years of negotiations, a new set of rules will be introduced in July 2020. According to the European Council, this new agreement is designed to guarantee fair competition, prevent fraud and increase consumer confidence. Importers have already started importing strictly complying with these rules.

However, the International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements (IFOAM) finds it highly likely that many small organic producers in developing countries will not be able to meet the requirements that are intended for EU countries due to different socio-economic and geographical conditions. Administrative burden and costs can also be a problem. This means that the manufacturer must assess its potential as an organic suppliervery well.
